Maths – curriculum information

“Our vision is to ensure that all pupils become fluent mathematicians who are able to reason mathematically and solve a range of problems using the mathematics they have learned.

We want to instill a love of Mathematics in the wider world and will achieve this by using a Maths Mastery approach so that pupils acquire a deep, long term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.”

We achieve mastery by breaking down learning into small steps so that pupils develop conceptual understanding, along with providing varied and frequent practice in the fundamentals of mathematics which supports pupils to rapidly recall and apply their Maths in different contexts.

We challenge pupils to work with mathematical problems of increasing sophistication by breaking them into small steps and persevering to seek solutions using probing questions and richer tasks!

Pupil quotes:

‘In year 4, we started by using dienes to add numbers with exchange, then we moved onto using place value counters. Now, I can add using just the digits in my book. Sometimes I use the counters to explain the exchanges to my partner.’

‘I like that when I’ve finished my work, there’s a Mastery Challenge and I always try to do the Greater Depth too – they’re tricky because there’s a lot more to think about! But even when it’s tricky Panthers never give up!’

‘In maths, my teacher always does an example with us, then we get to do one with our partner and then we do some on our own. I like partner work because we can help each other to solve problems.’

‘TT Rock Stars is amazing! I’m so quick with my times tables!’
