Design & Technology – curriculum information

At Adelaide Primary School, our approach to teaching Design and Technology (D&T) aims to equip every child with the creativity, problem-solving skills, and technical knowledge they need to thrive in a world increasingly shaped by design and innovation. We strive to provide a high-quality, engaging, and ambitious D&T curriculum that encourages pupils to think critically, innovate, and make informed decisions as they design, create, and evaluate solutions to real-world challenges.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that children develop both practical skills and an understanding of how design and technology influence the world around them. We provide opportunities for pupils to explore a variety of materials, tools, and technologies, enabling them to design and make products that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and purposeful. Through a hands-on, inquiry-based approach, children learn how to work with different materials, such as textiles, wood, and food, as well as digital tools for design and prototyping.

We believe that D&T education should not only focus on technical skills but also foster creative thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. Our lessons encourage pupils to experiment, iterate, and refine their designs, building resilience and a growth mindset in the process. By engaging in design challenges and projects, pupils apply their learning to real-world contexts, developing their ability to think critically about issues such as sustainability, ethics, and functionality in their designs.

Through high-quality teaching, we ensure that every child is able to progress in D&T, regardless of their starting point. We emphasize making connections between different areas of the curriculum, so pupils can see how D&T links with science, mathematics, art, and even history. We aim to nurture a deep understanding of the importance of design and technology in shaping our lives and the future, fostering in pupils the skills needed to contribute as thoughtful, responsible creators in a rapidly changing world.

In partnership with families and the wider community, we aim to inspire and empower every child to explore their potential as a designer or technologist. At Adelaide Primary School, we believe that a strong D&T education not only prepares pupils for future academic success but also empowers them to be creative problem-solvers and innovators who are ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
