Modern Foreign Languages

At Adelaide Primary School, we teach Spanish as our chosen Modern Foreign Language (MFL). We believe our lessons are designed to ignite curiosity, promote cultural awareness, and develop the linguistic skills essential for success in an interconnected world. Our Spanish curriculum (using Language Angels), is carefully structured to ensure all pupils achieve fluency and confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in another language.

Our curriculum prioritises the development of foundational knowledge in phonics, vocabulary, and grammar. Lessons are sequenced to ensure pupils systematically acquire and revisit key language structures, supporting progression from simple words and phrases to more complex sentences. We emphasize accurate pronunciation and intonation, fostering confidence in spoken Spanish while helping pupils make connections between spoken and written forms of the language.

We focus on Spanish as a means of communication, encouraging pupils to use the language purposefully in real-life contexts. Through interactive activities such as role-plays, dialogues, and storytelling, pupils build their conversational skills, while listening tasks and comprehension exercises develop their ability to interpret spoken and written Spanish with increasing accuracy.

We believe every child should have the opportunity to succeed in language learning. Lessons are tailored to meet diverse needs, with scaffolded tasks and adaptive support for pupils at different starting points. We embed cultural learning throughout the curriculum to broaden pupils’ understanding of Spanish-speaking countries and their traditions. This helps pupils see the value of language learning as a tool for engaging with diverse cultures and perspectives.

At Adelaide Primary School, the teaching of Spanish nurtures confident linguists who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and cultural understanding to thrive in a multilingual, global society.
