Welcome to Foundation Stage (F1 & F2)
At Adelaide Primary School, our Early Years Foundation Stage is designed to ensure that every child receives a strong, secure start to their learning journey. We nurture happy, confident children through a curriculum that is firmly rooted in the EYFS Statutory Framework (2025) and prioritises the Prime Areas of Learning, recognising their essential role in laying the foundations for future success.
Communication & Language at the Core of Our Curriculum
In line with the EYFS Framework, which identifies Communication and Language as a Prime Area essential for children’s cognitive and social development, we place it at the heart of everything we do.
We ensure:
- A language‑rich environment through high‑quality adult‑child interactions
- Daily opportunities for children to speak, listen, question, and explore vocabulary
- Incidental and planned learning moments focused on extending speech, communication, and understanding
- This approach ensures that every child’s voice is heard, and that all children—including those with SEND or EAL—can fully access and participate in our inclusive provision
Personal, Social & Emotional Development: Belonging, Safety and Emotional Literacy
Consistent with the EYFS requirement to support children’s emotional wellbeing and self‑regulation, we prioritise Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED).
We build an environment where children feel:
- Safe and emotionally secure through predictable routines and strong relationships
- A strong sense of belonging within our diverse school community
- Confident to take risks and show independence
- Able to develop resilience, empathy, and cooperation

Physical Development: Learning Through the Whole Body
In line with EYFS expectations for gross and fine motor development, our physical provision—indoors and outdoors—is intentionally designed to help children:
- Build core strength
- Develop balance and coordination
- Refine fine motor control
- Explore the world using their whole bodies
Children access high‑quality equipment and open‑ended resources that enable movement, exploration, creativity, and play. This aligns strongly with the EYFS Framework’s emphasis on physical development as a building block for writing, self‑care, and independence.
Characteristics of Effective Learning – Teaching Children How to Learn
We support children’s early metacognition through the Characteristics of Effective Learning, the EYFS’s core principles for developing effective, motivated learners.
Our child‑friendly characters help children understand these processes:
- Tryosaur – Keeping on trying (resilience and perseverance)
- Thinkasaur – Thinking critically (problem‑solving, reasoning)
- Explorasaur – Playing and exploring (curiosity, active engagement)
These characters are woven through our daily practice and ensure children develop the dispositions and habits of mind needed to be successful, reflective learners.
A Curriculum Built on Meaningful, Real‑World Experiences
Our curriculum aligns with all areas of the EYFS Framework, offering rich opportunities for children to engage in purposeful learning that builds knowledge, vocabulary, and understanding of the world.
This includes:
- All‑year‑round growing and harvesting of fruits and vegetables
- Regular visits to the school orchard to observe seasonal change and changes of state
- Hands‑on exploration of natural processes, lifecycles, weather and materials
These concrete experiences deepen children’s comprehension across all EYFS areas, particularly Understanding the World, and support stronger long‑term learning.

Every moment matters in our EYFS. Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure children leave Foundation Stage with:

No Additional Charges for Early Years Funded Places
We would like to remind parents and carers that, in line with statutory guidance, families must be able to access Early Education Funding (EEF) without being required to make additional payments.
In line with this, we confirm that there are no additional charges for children accessing Early Years funded places at our setting. All sessions, resources, and activities covered by the funded entitlement are provided free of charge.
